Lake Titicaca is the largest freshwater lake in the Andes. It faces a crisis as water levels are dropping, which impacts local farmers.
Millions of people depend on the lake, as well as animals. Long periods without rain, worsened by the El Nino phenomenon and increasing global temperatures, exposed lakebeds. For pre-Columbian communities, the lake was very important and they protected it for hundreds of years. Now, farmers have to deal with dry crops and empty wells. In many places, they can’t use boats but they have to walk across the lake.
We can see extreme weather events happening more often. Phenomena like El Nino are making the effects of climate change even worse.
