Craft whisky in Japan experienced a boom after 2008, gaining international acclaim, but a supply shortage led to soaring prices.

Major players like Suntory and Nikka have expanded their capacity, while new entrants, even from abroad, join the market. Concerns arise about potential quality issues with the influx of new players, posing a threat to Japan’s whisky reputation.
