A Virgin Atlantic passenger jet fueled entirely by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) completed a London-to-New York journey, showcasing the potential of low-carbon options.

Although it wasn’t the first such demonstration, this flight carried Virgin’s founder Richard Branson, and it emphasizes the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions and seek government support. However, the current challenge lies in the high cost and limited supply of materials for SAF production. SAF accounts for less than 0.1% of global jet fuel, and it costs three to five times more than regular fuel. Although airlines aim to reduce emissions by up to 70% with SAF made from waste, large-scale production remains difficult. The flight, a milestone for long-haul travel with 100% SAF, acknowledges the industry’s slow progress in decarbonization compared to road travel.
