South Korean dog meat farmers are protesting against the government’s efforts to ban raising dogs for meat.

The Korean Dog Meat Association argues for treating dog meat farming like other livestock practices, claiming that a ban would violate farmers’ and consumers’ rights. Despite Korea’s historical dog meat consumption, recent surveys indicate a majority of South Koreans oppose the practice. The country’s significant Buddhist population, aligned with animal rights values, also rejects all forms of meat farming, including dogs.

Borami Seo, an animal rights charity director, notes a growing awareness of animal welfare among South Koreans. While dog meat farming is already heavily restricted, the government’s attempt to outright ban the practice faces uncertainty due to passionate supporters on both sides.
