Plato’s grave – level 1
06-05-2024 07:00
In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupts. The ash covers the Herculaneum scrolls.
Now, scientists find the scrolls. They are using smart technology to read them. They find out about Plato. Plato is a famous philosopher. He dies when he is 81 years old. The scrolls tell us about his life. Now, we also know more about where his body is.
Professor Graziano Ranocchia from an Italian university leads the team. They want to use the same technology to read other scrolls, too. Finding the scrolls is very important. It tells us a lot about Plato and history.
Difficult words: ash (the grey powder which we get when something burns), scroll (a roll of paper for writing on), history (things which happen in the past).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What information have scientists been able to uncover using smart technology to read the Herculaneum scrolls and what significance does it hold for our understanding of Plato and history?
