Political violence in the EU – level 2
22-05-2024 07:00
Political violence is growing in the European Union. Many people are starting to have strong political views, and they are feeling unhappy with the government.
Recently, a man shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. This was the first attack on a European leader since 2003. Experts say that the political climate and elections are part of the problem. Extreme political groups are getting stronger, which leads to more violence. In Germany, attacks on politicians almost doubled in five years, with 2,790 incidents in 2023. France also saw more attacks on politicians, with a 32% increase in 2022.
People don’t trust the government and feel weak, which can stop them from joining politics.
Difficult words: violence (actions which hurt other people), political climate (people’s mood about politics), extreme (having very strong views and ideas).
