Political violence is rising in the European Union because of extremism and disappointment with the government.

The recent shooting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico highlights this rise. This was the first attack on a European head of state since 2003. Analysts from the European Policy Centre say the political climate and upcoming elections are partly to blame. Extreme political groups are becoming stronger, which leads to more verbal and physical violence and a polarized society. In Germany, attacks on politicians have nearly doubled in the last five years, with 2,790 incidents in 2023. France also saw a 32% increase in attacks on politicians in 2022.

Experts say that people don’t trust authorities and feel vulnerable. They warn that this environment may discourage people from getting involved in politics.
