Juneteenth – level 1

21-06-2024 07:00

Juneteenth is on June 19 every year. It is a US holiday since 2021.

The day is about freeing Black slaves in America. People start to celebrate it in the South. More people become interested after protests for George Floyd in 2020. The police kill him. People celebrate Juneteenth in the streets. Some states do not have the holiday yet. They do not have a law about it.

On June 19, 1865, a general frees slaves in Texas. It happens two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Texas makes Juneteenth a holiday in 1980. Now, many US states have the holiday. Juneteenth also makes us think about racial problems today in the US.

Difficult words: slave (a person who must work for someone else without money and do what they say), general (a top army officer), racial (about people’s skin color).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What event sparked a renewed interest in celebrating Juneteenth and what does the holiday make people reflect on?
