Greeks work six days a week – level 1
08-07-2024 07:00
Greeks start to work six days a week on July 1. It happens because there are not enough workers.
New rules let bosses ask workers to do two extra unpaid hours a day. They will have more free time later. This should be voluntary, but many workers must work longer without extra pay. Authorities rarely check if companies follow the rules. Greek workers already work the most hours in Europe, about 41 hours a week. But they get low pay. The new rule says that workers get 40% extra pay for the sixth day.
Some people say that this gives bosses too much power. It makes work harder. Many Greeks look for work abroad. They do not want to have hard jobs in tourism.
Difficult words: unpaid (work which you do not get money for), voluntary (when you do something because you want to, not because you must), extra (more).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some potential consequences of the new rule that allows bosses to ask workers to do two extra unpaid hours a day?
