South Africa food crisis

Southern Africa is experiencing a serious drought caused by the El Niño weather event, which makes some areas very dry. According to the United Nations, millions of people are without enough food.

Governments declared a national disaster in five countries – Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The drought is ruining crops and killing animals. Angola and Mozambique also have big problems.

The UN says that more than 27 million people are suffering, and 21 million children are not getting enough food. The situation will get worse until the next harvest in March or April 2025. The UN is giving food and cash to people in need, but it needs a lot more.

Difficult words: drought (long time with no rain), suffer (to experience something bad or difficult), harvest (getting crops and animals for food).
