Salmon farming and tech – level 1
23-10-2024 07:00
Salmon farming is a big business. But it has some problems.
Norway and Chile are the biggest salmon producers. The fish often get sick or die. Small parasites attack the fish and make them weak. It is not easy to stop the parasites. Some farms, like Norlock in Norway, use chemicals, fresh water, and even lasers to kill them.
In Chile, farms use a lot of medicine to keep the fish healthy. But this can hurt the environment. Some farms are now trying a new way of farming. They use big tanks instead of open water. This could help make salmon farming better for the environment.
Difficult words: parasite (an animal or plant which lives on another and feeds from it), weak (not strong enough), environment (the natural world).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What methods are being used by salmon farms in Norway and Chile to combat the issue of parasites and sickness among their fish, and what new farming technique is being tried to potentially improve the environmental impact of salmon farming?
