Salmon farming and tech – level 2

23-10-2024 07:00

Salmon farming is a big business and Norway and Chile are the leading producers of farmed salmon. The industry makes billions of dollars, but issues like diseases, fish deaths, and parasites are becoming hard to control.

In Norway, farms like Norlock are trying to reduce the number of sick fish. They use chemicals, freshwater baths, and even lasers to kill parasites. But even with these new technologies, salmon farming has a lot of problems. Farmed salmon often escape from the nets and can spread disease to wild salmon.

In Chile, salmon farms use large amounts of antibiotics to fight diseases, but this can also harm the environment and human health. Some salmon farms are trying new methods, like closed aquaculture, where they keep fish in tanks instead of in open water. This could help make salmon farming more sustainable in the future.

Difficult words: parasite (an animal or plant which lives on another animal or plant and feeds from it), escape (to get free from a place), antibiotic (a medicine which destroys bacteria in the body).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the methods being used in Norway and Chile to combat the issues of disease and parasites in salmon farming, and how might these methods impact the environment and human health?
