Vietnam’s Business Queen ends – level 2

25-10-2024 07:00

Truong My Lan, a rich Vietnamese businesswoman is guilty of a large fraud worth over 12 billion dollars. She received a death sentence but is asking for a new trial.

Her case shocked Vietnam’s business world. Lan started her business by buying cheap land in the 1980s and created a leading real estate company. Over time, she also took control of a bank and used fake companies to take out large loans.

Vietnam’s government is trying to reduce corruption, but this is impacting business activities. Even with these problems, foreign companies like Apple and Samsung are still investing in Vietnam, making it an attractive country for business. But Vietnam needs clearer rules for its economy to grow.

Difficult words: fraud (the crime of getting money by cheating on people), real estate company (a company which buys, sell, and develops land, homes, and other buildings), corruption (dishonest behavior by people in power).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What methods did Truong My Lan use to commit her large-scale fraud and how has her case impacted Vietnam's business world?
