New Zealand protest – level 2
25-11-2024 07:00
Thousands of people marched to New Zealand’s parliament, angry about a new bill which, they say, threatens Maori people.
The bill focuses on the Treaty of Waitangi, a document the British Crown and Maori chiefs signed in 1840. It promised Maori land and cultural rights. David Seymour introduced the bill, and he wanted to change the treaty. He says that it will make all New Zealanders equal. But many people don’t agree. They say the bill is unfair and divides the country.
Protesters marched over 1,000 kilometers to keep the treaty for future generations. Schools let children join to learn about history. The government won’t probably pass the bill, but there may be a public vote about it.
Difficult words: threaten (to bring an unpleasant or unwelcome result), right (something you can have or do), equal (the same).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the Treaty of Waitangi that David Seymour wants to change and why are many people against this proposed bill?
