Gap is doing well before Christmas – level 3

27-11-2024 07:00

Gap’s shares increased by nearly 177% on Friday morning after the clothing retailer raised its annual sales forecast.

CEO Richard Dixon mentioned that the holiday shopping season has started very well. Gap saw growth across all its brands, including Old Navy, for the first time in almost two years. This positive outlook contrasts with Target’s lower sales forecast and supports Walmart’s view that consumers are still spending. Dixon, who became CEO in August 2023, has worked to improve the in-store experience and focused on selling at full prices.

The strategy of offering new styles at higher prices is paying off. An analyst told Reuters that Gap will likely do less discounting this holiday season. The company now expects its annual sales to grow by 1.5% to 2%, which is higher than its earlier target of a small increase. Despite challenges, its struggling brands, Athleta and Banana Republic, saw sales growth in the third quarter.

Difficult words: retailer (a company that sells goods to the public), forecast (a prediction about the future), discounting (selling at a lower price).
