W.E.B. Du Bois was a leader and writer who fought against racism.
His book, The Souls of Black Folk, talks about African Americans living as both African and American. Du Bois used facts and pictures to show that Black people are equal to others. In 1920, he wrote a story called The Comet about a disaster that ended segregation for a short time. He also lived during the 1906 Atlanta riots, where many Black people were hurt.
Du Bois helped start the NAACP, the first group to fight for civil rights in America. He wrote about double consciousness, the feeling of being between two worlds. He loved sad songs, which gave strength and hope to African Americans.
Difficult words: equal (the same), segregation (keeping groups apart), riot (a protest).
