Winter solstice at Stonehenge – level 2

25-12-2024 07:00

Many people came to Stonehenge to celebrate the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The sunrise at 8:09 GMT marked the start of longer days.

Visitors gathered early, although it was windy weather. They enjoyed the event’s spiritual and happy atmosphere. Stonehenge, which is usually closed, opens for this special day because the stones align with the sun during solstices. A visitor said he wanted to think about the past year and prepare for the new one.

In Avebury, people tied ribbons to trees, a tradition to honor loved ones or pray. Glastonbury Tor also had celebrations with singing and rituals. These events connect people to old traditions and nature.

Difficult words: gather (to meet), align (to match up in a straight line or position), ritual (actions which people do for a specific purpose).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why does Stonehenge open for the winter solstice and what is the significance of the stones' alignment with the sun during this time?
