US official visits India – level 2

28-05-2026 07:00

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, was on a four-day visit to India. He met with the Indian Prime Minister in New Delhi to talk about business, safety, and energy.

Energy is the biggest problem right now because there is a war in Iran. This war stopped oil ships in the Middle East, and India desperately needs oil for its factories and cars. Marco Rubio said the US wants to sell a lot of energy to India to help. Relations between the US and India are not always easy. US President Donald Trump has a good relationship with Pakistan, which makes India unhappy. Also, the two countries had fights about tariffs in the past. Trump recently lowered these taxes because India promised to buy American planes, technology, and energy. During his trip, Rubio will also meet with leaders from Japan and Australia to talk about peace.

Difficult words: Secretary of State (the boss of foreign affairs), desperately (in a way which shows need or a hopeless situation), tariff (a tax on things from abroad).

Why has India been struggling to secure enough oil for its factories and cars?
