Ebola outbreak in DR Congo – level 2

29-05-2026 07:00

The World Health Organization says that the Ebola problem in the Democratic Republic of Congo is now very serious. A dangerous type of the Ebola virus is spreading fast in the east of the country. So far, 750 people are sick, and 177 people died.

This virus is very scary because it kills one-third of the people who get infected, and doctors don’t have a vaccine for it yet. The situation is very hard because there is a war in the area, and hospitals don’t have enough medical supplies. The government stopped big funerals because touching the bodies of dead people can spread the virus. This made some families angry, and they even burned down medical tents. Many local people don’t trust foreign doctors and think they brought the sickness.

There is some good news, too. Scientists from Oxford University are making a new vaccine and want to test it in a few months. But it will still take time before it can help everyone.

Difficult words: infected (when a person has a virus in their body), medical supply (tools and medicines which doctors need to help sick people), funeral (a ceremony for a dead person).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did the government ban large funerals, and how did some local families respond to this measure?
