Explosion in Mexico – level 2

On the southern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, there was an explosion at a petrochemical plant. The explosion killed at least 3 people and injured more than 100, including 58 workers.

The explosion happened at the Mexican national oil company Pemex in the Gulf state of Veracruz. The cause of the explosion was not clear, but it was not the first explosion at the company’s facilities.

The plant produced vinyl chloride, which is a dangerous chemical that people use to make PVC pipes. The explosion sent a toxic cloud up into the air. People were told to stay indoors because of the chemicals.
