A Russian drone hits a house in Romania – level 2
05-06-2026 07:00
Last weekend, a Russian drone hit a big apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați. The explosion injured a woman and a child, and local people were very scared.
Romania sent fast fighter jets to help, but they couldn’t shoot the drone down. The city is very close to the border with Ukraine, so the army had only a few minutes to see the drone and react. Experts also say that fast jets are not the right tool for small, slow drones. If pilots shoot them over a big city, dangerous broken pieces could fall and hurt more people.
Russian drones crossed borders before, but this is the first time a drone injures citizens in a NATO country. Now, Romania is asking NATO to send better defense weapons quickly to close the gaps and protect the people.
Difficult words: react (to do or say something because of something else that just happened), citizen (a person who officially belongs to a city or country), defense (protection against attack, danger, or harm).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why were Romania's fast fighter jets unable to shoot the drone down?
