Belfast protests after a knife attack – level 1

15-06-2026 07:00

There are big fights and protests in the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, for two nights. The trouble starts because a man from Sudan attacks a local man with a knife. The local man is badly hurt, and he loses an eye.

Police catch the attacker.  After the attack, many people get angry. Riots start. People throw stones and bottles at the police. Cars and houses are on fire. The police must use a big water machine to stop the fights. Schools, shops, and buses stop early in the day. People go home to stay safe. By the afternoon, the center of the city is without people.

Politicians say that the violence must stop. The family of the hurt man also asked for calm. They thank the people who save the man’s life. But they say that it is bad to use this sad event to hate others or fight.

Difficult words: local (a person who lives in a specific place), riot (a bad situation when many people fight and destroy things), violence (when somebody hurts others and destroys things).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did the police use to stop the fights?
