El Niño 2026 – level 3

22-06-2026 15:00

US forecasters warn that El Niño has officially arrived and could reach historic strength in the coming months.

This natural phenomenon occurs every two to seven years when westerly winds push warm surface water eastward across the Pacific Ocean and change global weather patterns.

The UN is urging governments to prepare for extreme and erratic weather. The combination of a strong El Niño and human-induced climate change will likely make next year the warmest on record. This dramatic shift creates different climate challenges around the world. Regions like Southeast Asia, Australia, and Southern Africa are struggling with droughts and intense heat. Meanwhile, the Pacific will experience increased hurricane activity, though the Atlantic will see fewer storms.

Experts stress that developing nations must act immediately to protect their agriculture from changing rainfall. Also, governments worldwide need to establish cooling shelters to protect vulnerable populations from dangerous heat waves.

Difficult words: eastward (moving or looking towards the east direction), erratic (changing often and completely unpredictable, without any regular or safe plan), vulnerable (weak and easily hurt, damaged, or affected by something bad).
