Every year, Europe sends a lot of waste to developing countries. But not all of this is legal.

This illegal trade hurts the environment and helps criminals get rich. The EU is working to stop waste exports and improve recycling in Europe. In 2020, 300 containers of waste had to go back from Tunisia to Italy. New EU rules make it hard for non-OECD countries to get waste if they can’t deal with it right. They also stop sending plastic waste outside the EU.

Italy has a new system to catch illegal waste shipments. They check containers with false labels. Europe is now recycling materials like copper from old cables, but it is still only 12% of all waste. We need more rules and help to recycle more.

Difficult words: export (things which a country sends to another country for sale), shipment (sending goods to another country on a ship, train, and so on), label (a piece of paper with information about a product).
