People in Albania protest against a resort for the rich – level 2
16-06-2026 07:00
People in Albania are very angry right now. They are protesting in the streets because a rich man wants to build luxury hotels on Sazan Island.
This man is Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump. He wants to spend a lot of money to change this beautiful, quiet island into a place for rich tourists.
The people living in Albania are upset because the government made this deal in secret. Nobody knew about it until they read it in the papers. Protesters are holding toy flamingos because they want to protect the wild birds and the clean water around the island. More than 200 types of birds live there, and people fear the big buildings will destroy their homes.
The government says people are wrong and the project will not destroy the island. Kushner also tried to build a hotel in Serbia, but the people there protested, the police found bad dealings, and he had to stop. Now, the people of Albania hope they can stop him too and save their nature.
Difficult words: luxury (very expensive, beautiful, and comfortable, made for rich people to enjoy), secret (something you don’t say to anyone), flamingo (a large pink bird with long thin legs and a long neck that lives near water).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why are Albanians protesting Jared Kushner's plan to build luxury hotels on Sazan Island, and why are protesters holding toy flamingos?
