People in Albania protest against a resort for the rich – level 3
16-06-2026 07:00
Lots of people in Albania are really angry and are protesting in the streets of their capital city. They are trying to stop a huge 1.6 billion dollar project on Sazan Island.
The project is led by an investment firm that belongs to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump. Kushner wants to build a luxury resort for rich tourists there.
Regular people and local politicians are upset because the government kept the whole deal a secret until they saw it in the newspapers. Protesters are carrying pictures of flamingos because the island is surrounded by beautiful wild nature and water where more than 200 kinds of birds live. People worry that building hotels and moving big machines there will have a severe impact on the island’s pristine ecosystems.
The prime minister claims the protesters are wrong; however, the state anti-corruption group has already started looking into the deal. People hope they can stop this project just like protesters in Serbia stopped Kushner’s plans to build a luxury hotel on the site of a former army headquarters destroyed by NATO bombings in 1999.
Difficult words: secret (something that is hidden from other people and not told to the public), pristine (fresh, clean, and beautiful, looking like it has never been touched or damaged by humans), anti-corruption (working to stop dishonest or illegal behavior by people in power, like government officials taking hidden money).
