Social media makes Scotland popular – level 2
16-06-2026 15:00
Scotland is very popular on social media right now. Millions of people see beautiful photos on Instagram and want to visit the mountains and castles.
This tourism brings a lot of money and jobs to Scotland, but it also brings big problems to quiet villages.
Too many tourists come in big campervans and block the narrow roads. Local people cannot get to work or school easily. Tourists also leave rubbish, and there are not enough parking spaces. Another big problem is housing because many houses are now used only for holidays, so local families cannot buy them.
Now, some places are making tourists pay a special tax, and they are making strict rules for holiday houses. Travel influencers are also trying to help by not showing small, hidden places online anymore.
Difficult words: campervan (a large vehicle like a big van that has beds, a kitchen, and everything you need for living inside while traveling), narrow (when one side of the road is not far from the other one), hidden (a place which not so many people know about).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How do big campervans and houses used only for holidays create problems for quiet villages, and what measures are being introduced to reduce these issues?
