The Great Wall Marathon – level 1

The Great Wall Marathon is a big running race in China. It is one of the hardest races in the world.
Every year in May, about 1,300 people from many countries come to run it. The race is very special because people run on the famous Great Wall of China.
This race is not like a normal city race. It has 5,164 old stone steps. Some steps are small, and some are very big. It is also very hot and sunny during the race. A normal marathon takes 4. This marathon takes more than 7 hours because the stairs are so steep.
Sometimes runners fall or get too hot. Doctors are there to help them with water and medicine. People do not run fast here. They run slowly. They want to enjoy this beautiful and historic place.
