US-Iran peace deal – level 3

22-06-2026 07:00

US President Donald Trump has announced that Washington reached a historic peace agreement with Iran, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar.

The deal includes an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.

According to Trump, Iran committed not to develop nuclear weapons and agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for global energy supplies. While the US might lift economic sanctions, Trump ruled out giving Tehran cash. Although a virtual signing was originally planned, it was delayed after Israel tried to disrupt the process. Pakistani Prime Minister announced that the official signing ceremony would now take place on Friday in Switzerland.

If signed, the memorandum of understanding will start a 60-day negotiation period to solve the hardest problems, such as Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles and its civilian nuclear programme, despite deep mistrust between both sides.

Difficult words: mediate (to help two people or countries talk to each other so they can stop fighting and find an agreement), rule out (to decide that something is completely impossible or that you will definitely not allow it to happen), memorandum (an official written document or a short agreement that records a plan or a promise between people or governments).

What does the agreement call for regarding military operations (including Lebanon), Iran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz, and what did Trump say the US might do about sanctions and cash payments?
