Prime Minister cancels her wedding – level 3
28-01-2022 15:00
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that she canceled her wedding due to an outbreak of Omicron cases.
The country will tighten COVID-19 rules because of the increase in number of cases of the highly infectious Omicron.
The government already delayed a phased reopening of the border.
At the same time, New Zealand is rushing to give booster vaccination shots, and it began giving them to children. 93% of adults are now fully vaccinated; however, the evidence from neighboring Australia shows that Omicron will still lead to a surge in infections.
Ardern said that there was a gathering limit of 100 people at sporting or private events, which meant that people had to reschedule weddings and funerals. The Prime Minister added that she was sorry for anyone who was in a similar scenario.
Difficult words: phase (to introduce something in stages over a particular period of time), surge (a sudden and great increase), scenario (a development of events).
