Biodegradable tampons – level 1
13-03-2024 07:00
Plastic period products are bad for the natural world. They are the fifth most common plastic on European beaches. There are more of them than plastic cups and straws.
The European Parliament wants to find better options. They are looking into using biodegradable materials, like fibers from algae, to make tampons.
These tampons are from a white material. So it is not necessary to make them white with chemicals. It is important to grow these materials in a way which does not hurt the natural world. Researchers are working on better ways to do this on land and in the sea. We need to throw away less plastics.
Difficult words: period (a flow of blood from a woman’s body which happens every month), option (a thing you may choose), biodegradable (able to break down naturally).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What kind of materials are researchers looking into to create biodegradable tampons, and why is it important to avoid harming the natural world in the process?
