What is ultra-processed food – level 3
17-05-2024 15:00
The global debate on ultra-processed food (UPF) has raised concerns about its impact on health.
UPF generally includes foods with ingredients not used in home cooking, like ready meals, pot noodles, and even sliced bread. Studies suggest a link between UPF and poor health. Dr. Chris Van Tulleken, a doctor, scientist, and journalist, has been vocal about the dangers of UPF, especially after seeing its effects during his work in humanitarian emergencies. Tulleken shifted his focus from infectious diseases to the commercial determinants of health. He studied how big companies influence health, particularly through infant and adult nutrition.
UPF is industrially processed to maximize profit, and it often contains additives not found in home kitchens. While processed foods have been part of human diets for millennia, UPF is different and linked to health issues due to high levels of salt, fat, and sugar.
Difficult words: vocal (expressing opinions or feeling freely or loudly), determinant (a factor that influences something).
