Pope Francis visits East Timor – level 2
11-09-2024 07:00
On September 9th, Pope Francis visited East Timor. It was the first papal visit since the country became independent from Indonesia.
The capital, Dili, was celebrating the Pope’s visit, but there was also some anger. Workers built a new altar for the Pope, which cost about 1 million dollars. But local people had to leave their homes because of the project. Many families are unsure where they will go next, and they are waiting for money promised by the government. The church says it is only responsible for building the altar and that the government decided to move people.
East Timor has a special connection to the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II visited the country in 1989, during Indonesian rule.
Difficult words: papal (related to a pope or the Roman Catholic Church), altar (raised place for religious ceremonies).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What was the controversy surrounding Pope Francis's visit to East Timor and how did it relate to the construction of a new altar?
