Veggy steak can be called a steak – level 1
14-10-2024 15:00
The EU says that plant-based foods can use names like “vegetarian burger” and “vegan steak.” This helps people know what they are buying.
Some people think this is good. Others worry that different countries may have different rules. A student from Portugal thinks that plant-based foods should have different names. They are not meat. Another student finds the names helpful for cooking.
In France, plant-based foods cannot use names like “steak” or “ham.” This makes things difficult for companies. About 70% of people say that using meat names is okay. But the food must have a label as vegetarian or vegan.
Difficult words: plant-based (coming from plants, not animals), rule (what people must or must not do), label (a piece of paper or plastic with information about a product or thing).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
