Veggy steak can be called a steak – level 2

14-10-2024 15:00

The European court decided that plant-based products can keep using names like “vegetarian burger” and “vegan steak.”

This is good for consumers because it helps them understand what they are buying. But there is a worry that different countries in Europe might make their own rules, which could confuse people. Some people think that plant-based products should have different names because they are not meat. Others find the current names helpful for recipes.

In France, there are strict laws which stop plant-based foods from using names like “steak” or “ham.” Companies don’t know what to do now.  About 70% of consumers are okay with using meat names if the product has a vegetarian or vegan label.

Difficult words: plant-based (coming from plants, not animals), confuse (to make unclear or difficult to understand), current (the one which exists now), label (a small piece of paper or plastic which gives information about a product or object).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the concerns regarding different countries in Europe making their own rules about the naming of plant-based products?
