Biden says sorry for Indian boarding schools – level 1
31-10-2024 07:00
President Joe Biden says sorry for Indian boarding schools. These schools have rooms for children. Children live there. The US government helps create and pay for these schools.
These schools are open from 1819 to 1969. Indigenous children must live away from their families. They cannot speak their languages or show their culture. Many children die in these schools. Official numbers say it is 1,000 children. But it may be much more.
It is good that the US says sorry. But US people must learn about this history. They must understand how bad it is.
Difficult words: create (to make or produce something), Indigenous (the first people of a country), culture (what a group of people believes, thinks, and does).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What actions does the text suggest US people should take in response to the history of Indian boarding schools?
