Biden says sorry for Indian boarding schools – level 2

31-10-2024 07:00

President Joe Biden apologized for the United States’ role in Indian boarding schools. These schools existed from 1819 to 1969, and the government helped run them.

The US government forced Indigenous children to live in these schools, where they had to leave their families, couldn’t speak their languages or show their cultures. Nearly 1,000 Indigenous children died in these schools, but the actual number could be much higher.

Deb Haaland, the first Indigenous US Interior Secretary, said these schools caused a lot of suffering. India welcomed the apology, but they said that people needed to learn more about these events and understand how they hurt Indigenous communities.

Difficult words: apologize (to say sorry), Indigenous (the first people of a country), suffering (a feeling of great pain or sadness).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What was the reaction of India to President Joe Biden's apology for the United States' role in Indian boarding schools and what did they suggest should be done to address the issue?
