Youngest astronauts in space – level 3

05-11-2024 07:00

China has celebrated a ‘complete success’ after launching its youngest astronauts, or taikonauts, to its space station, Tiangong, also called the Heavenly Palace.

This mission marks another achievement in China’s rapidly advancing space program, which has caught the attention of the US. NASA’s chief recently voiced concerns about a renewed space race, worried China could eventually claim resources on the Moon. China’s current lunar goals include numerous missions, such as gathering samples from the far side of the Moon. Additionally, China aims to deploy more satellites to rival existing systems like Elon Musk’s Starlink.

The three chosen astronauts, including the country’s first female space engineer, trained rigorously for a year to prepare for their tasks in space, including spacewalks and experiments. China’s space rivalry with the US may expand as both countries aim to secure strategic positions in space.

Difficult words: voice (to express something in words), deploy (to bring into use), rigorously (with strict attention to detail), rivalry (competition for superiority in the same field).

What are some of the goals of China's current lunar missions and how have they impacted the US's view on the space race?
