COP29 is the UN climate meeting. It takes place every year. It just starts in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Leaders from 200 countries meet. They talk about stopping global warming. They want to keep temperatures from rising above 1.5°C. This is the goal of the Paris Agreement. Scientists say that 2024 will be the hottest year yet. But the new US president, Donald Trump, does not agree with big climate actions. The US sends people to the meeting. Nobody knows what happens when Donald Trump takes office in January.

This year, richer nations will also talk about giving money to poorer countries. This money should help them move away from fossil fuels. Many poor countries want much more than the 100 billion dollars which they get every year.

Difficult words: global warming (warming of the planet), temperature (how hot or cold something is), fossil fuels (oil, gas, or coal).
