COP29 – level 3

15-11-2024 15:00

The UN’s annual climate conference, COP29, is underway in Baku, Azerbaijan. Over 200 nations attend to address pressing climate challenges.

The focus is on ways to limit global warming to 1.5°C, a goal set by the Paris Agreement. This year’s COP is especially crucial as 2024 is expected to be the hottest year on record. However, the recent US election of Donald Trump, a climate skeptic, may impact international climate action. While the US sent representatives to Baku, any commitments they make could be overturned when Trump takes office in January.

Known as the ‘Money COP,’ a major issue this year is climate finance: wealthier countries are expected to increase support for poorer nations transitioning from fossil fuels. Although the current commitment is 100 billion dollars annually, developing countries are pushing for far more, possibly over a trillion dollars. International cooperation is seen as essential to tackle these challenges effectively.

Difficult words: pressing (urgent), crucial (necessary), skeptic (someone who questions or doubts).
