COP29 – level 2
15-11-2024 15:00
COP29, the UN’s annual climate conference, began in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Leaders from around 200 nations are taking part. They will discuss how to stop global temperatures from rising more than 1.5°C, a limit set by the Paris Agreement. This year’s meeting comes as scientists expect 2024 to be the hottest year yet. Donald Trump, recently elected US president, doesn’t support strong climate action. The US sent representatives to Baku, but they may not keep promises after January when Trump starts his term.
This year’s COP will also focus on money. Richer nations should help poorer countries reduce their use of fossil fuels and deal with climate change. Developing nations are asking for more than the current 100 billion dollars a year.
Difficult words: limit (the greatest amount, number, or level), term (a period that someone works in a job), developing nation (a country which is working on improving its economy).
