Russia stops sending gas to Austria – level 3
21-11-2024 07:00
Russia has stopped gas supplies to Austria after a disagreement over payments involving OMV, Austria’s largest energy provider.
The dispute started when OMV demanded 230 million euros from Gazprom for failing to deliver the promised gas to OMV’s German unit. Austria’s gas supplies remain stable due to strong reserves. However, this decision highlights the reduction in Europe’s dependence on Russian gas since the Ukraine war began in 2022. Most Russian gas now flows through Ukraine, but this route is expected to close at the end of the year as Ukraine will not renew its transit agreement. Slovakia, a major customer, has increased its gas purchases, but Austria’s refusal to pay Gazprom has reduced the volume of gas flowing through the pipeline.
Russia used to provide over a third of Europe’s gas, but its market share has dropped significantly. Nations like Germany now rely more on Norway and the US for energy.
Difficult words: dispute (a serious argument), transit (the act of moving through a place), significantly (notably, seriously).
