Russia stops sending gas to Austria – level 2

21-11-2024 07:00

Russia stopped sending gas to Austria because of a fight over money with OMV, Austria’s biggest gas company.

OMV says Gazprom didn’t send enough gas and owes it 230 million euros. Austria says it has plenty of gas in storage, so there is no problem right now. Most Russian gas to Europe still travels through Ukraine, but this will stop at the end of the year because Ukraine will not allow it anymore. Some countries, like Slovakia, are asking for more gas from Russia. Austria’s decision to stop paying Gazprom made the pipeline send less gas.

Before the war in Ukraine, Russia sold a lot of gas to Europe. Now, countries like Germany buy more gas from Norway and the US.

Difficult words: storage (a place to keep something to use later), allow (to make something possible), pipeline (a long tube for carrying gas).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did Austria stop paying Gazprom, leading to a reduction in the gas supply from the pipeline?
