South Africa illegal miners – level 3
26-11-2024 15:00
Hundreds of workers have been hiding in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa for almost three weeks now.
The police initially cut off food and water supplies to force them out, but supporters and worried relatives have started sending these down to help the trapped miners survive. The South African government has been trying to plan a rescue mission, but so far there has not been much progress or information about what is causing the delay. The miners are facing arrest for their illegal activities, which is why they are refusing to come out. Despite some efforts to rescue a few miners using ropes and pulleys, many others remain underground in terrible condition, without food or water.
Many miners continue to do illegal mining because of limited job opportunities in South Africa, even though they don’t want to live this risky lifestyle. The rescue operation might take a few more days as authorities are waiting for more information before proceeding.
Difficult words: abandoned (left in a particular place or condition, usually forever), trapped (unable to move or escape from a place or situation), pulley (a piece of equipment for moving heavy objects up and down).
