A court cancels Romania elections – level 3

12-12-2024 07:00

Romania’s highest court has canceled the ongoing presidential election following accusations of interference by Russia. The election must now be restarted.

It featured a contest between far-right, pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu and pro-European centrist Elena Lasconi. Before November’s first round of voting, Georgescu had low support in polls but surprisingly finished first, raising concerns about the election’s validity. Georgescu called the court’s decision a coup, while Lasconi condemned it as illegal and harmful to democracy. If elected, Georgescu’s presidency could shift Romania closer to Russia-friendly politics, challenging its pro-European and NATO stance. Romania’s security council revealed Russian hybrid attacks targeted the election, prompting an investigation into Georgescu’s campaign.

Russia denies any involvement. President Klaus Iohannis will extend his term until a new vote occurs, possibly in March 2025. Citizens expressed frustration over the court’s decision, but parliamentary results from December were unaffected.

Difficult words: validity (being valid or reasonable), coup (an unexpected achievement), stance (a publicly stated opinion).
