Iceland and women – level 2
13-12-2024 07:00
Iceland is famous for gender equality and was first globally for 15 years.
Women get equal pay and good parental leave. Schools also help by teaching boys and girls to develop skills they might not usually learn. For example, girls learn to be confident, while boys focus on being caring. Nearly 90% of women work, and fathers actively share child care.
But Iceland still has problems, for example, high rates of violence against women. About 40% of women experienced physical or sexual attacks. Many cases don’t go to court. Activists say the legal system must improve. The situation in Iceland shows us what is possible to achieve, but there are still problems the country needs to deal with.
Difficult words: gender equality (when men and women have the same rights and opportunities), equal (the same), violence (when someone wants to hurt other people or damage something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some of the measures taken in Iceland to promote gender equality and what challenges does the country still face in this regard?
