Turkey and Syrian refugees – level 2

20-12-2024 07:00

Turkey will get one billion euros more from the EU to help with Syrian refugees.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced this after meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Both leaders agreed that Syria needs stability and peace. The money will help Turkey cover the costs of hosting four million refugees. Turkey needs more money for schools, hospitals, and social programs. Von der Leyen said the EU will also work more with Syria’s government to stop the return of groups like ISIS.

Turkey is important in the region because it has a close relationship with Syrian rebel leaders. Erdogan is happy about the support but wants the EU to end its economic sanctions on Syria. Turkey hopes this will happen soon to help rebuild the country.

Difficult words: refugee (a person who leaves their country because of war or natural disaster), stability (being steady and peaceful), host (to have people who you look after).
