Turkey and Syrian refugees – level 3
20-12-2024 07:00
Turkey will receive an additional one billion euros from the EU to assist Syrian refugees living in the country.
This decision was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Both leaders emphasized the importance of stability and unity in Syria. The funds aim to support Turkey, which hosts approximately four million Syrian refugees, with education, healthcare, and social services. Von der Leyen highlighted the EU’s commitment to helping Turkey facilitate the voluntary return of refugees to Syria. Additionally, the EU plans to enhance its engagement with Syria’s Islamist-led government to prevent the resurgence of extremist groups like ISIS.
Turkey, seen as a key player in the region, has strong ties with Syrian rebel leaders. Erdogan views this funding as a diplomatic success, but Turkey continues to press for the lifting of economic sanctions on Syria to enable reconstruction.
Difficult words: facilitate (to make a process easier), enhance (increase, or intensify), resurgence (a rising again into life or activity).
