German market attack – level 3

24-12-2024 07:00

A 50-year-old Saudi doctor drove his car into a busy Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, killing at least four people, including a child, and injuring over 68 others, with 15 in serious condition.

The market, a popular event attracting many visitors, turned into chaos as the car sped through a gap in the concrete barriers designed for safety. The suspect, who had lived in Germany for 18 years and worked as a doctor, acted alone. Authorities quickly arrested him and confirmed no explosives were found in his car. The suspect had no criminal record and had previously criticized Islam publicly. Police have launched an investigation into the motive, which remains unclear.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed condolences and visited the scene. The incident has raised concerns about security at public events and possible political exploitation by far-right groups ahead of upcoming elections. Nearby markets have increased security measures.

Difficult words: motive (a reason for doing something), exploitation (using something for personal gain).
