Dr. Copper – level 1

14-03-2025 07:00

Copper is a red-brown metal. People use it to make wires. Experts call it Dr. Copper. Its price can show how good or bad the world economy is.

This year, copper prices go up by almost 14%. Usually, this means the economy is getting better, and factories need more copper. China is trying to help people buy more things. There are problems with business between the US, China, and Europe. The price of copper in China and the UK was very different. On February 10th, the difference was 920 dollars per metric ton. By February 28th, it is 816 dollars. This is still high but lower than before. Before, the difference is 250 to 500 dollars. Maybe the high price does not mean the economy is strong. Experts are not sure why the price is changing.

Difficult words: wire (a piece of thin metal), difference (how different things are), metric ton (1,000 kilograms).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors mentioned in the text raise doubts about relying solely on rising copper prices as a signal of a strong economy?
